Disassembly difficulty: During the process of disassembly, you may find challenges, especially if the aftercooler has not been maintained for a long time. Additionally, the aluminum housing is prone to corrosion and relatively easy to damage. As soon as the hoses are removed from the housing, you may start loosening the 12 nuts holding the housing together. The application of an anti-rust agent like WD-40 is suggested before starting the process. Remove the cover carefully without damaging the 12 studs – a gentle sideways motion may help it get unstuck. Remove the old gasket, and lift up the aftercooler insert.

Core cleaning or replacement: Having torn your aftercooler apart brings you the chance to clean its core. If the air cells of your core are very oily, you probably have a problem with your turbo. The proper way to clean the core is to leave it overnight in a mix of ½ liter 35% vinegar concentrate diluted with 3.5L of water. The next day, rinse with a lot of soap water. All mating surfaces must be meticulously cleaned so that they are free of oil or other contaminants; failing to do so may lead to improper sealing. If you use a more concentrated acid, remember that you always pour the acid into the water, never the other way around; otherwise, an exothermic reaction will be initiated. An outdoor place, or a properly ventilated is preferred, as well as using basic protection, like latex gloves and eye protection. Having said the core is made of aluminium, there might be excessive corrosion due to neglect of maintenance. Seal Placement: Make sure that all the mating surfaces are clean and free of any contaminants, in order to achieve a proper sealant.
